Have you heard of this Advent Conspiracy book/DVD/movement? It's a movement encouraging us to once again make Christmas a world-changing event. The principles are: worship fully, spend less, give more, love all.
Spend less. Give more. These have been hitting Chris and I this year.
Americans spend $450 billion dollars on Christmas every year. That's nuts. Why do we do that?
Advent Conspiracy is about spending less. It's also about giving more. Giving in ways that really give. Buying things that give to someone in need as well as to the person on your list. Like TOMs shoes. You buy a really cool pair of shoes for, say, your husband, and TOMs gives a pair of shoes to a child in need as well. Give more.
Chris and I are trying to do things differently this year. We're trying to follow these principles. As sad as it makes me to say it, it's hard. We're used to doing Christmas for us. But it's not for us.
We've spent less this year. All three of us are getting TOMs shoes under the tree. It's a step. And it's exciting.
Check out the Advent Conspiracy website. And may it challenge you like it's challenging us.
